About
Melanie was just the Host of a paranormal investigation show that had taken off on YouTube, until she had an experience that even her fellow ghost hunters wouldn't believe. Trying to find out the truth about what she saw led her into the bowels of the Magnus Institute, where she was pulled deeper and deeper until she unknowingly signed her life away on the dotted line of an employment contract. Since then, her righteous rage fuelled at first by a bullet shot into her leg by a war ghost and then by her own conviction, she has rallied against her imprisonment constantly with a mix of violence and other more personal rebellions.
It's only now that she's found her way out. Blinding yourself is a drastic measure to have to take, but it's worth it to her. She's been through a lot to keep hold of her humanity and freedom and she's not about to give it up now.

Personality
Melanie is angry. She has always been angry, because for her anger is both a driving force and a substitute emotion in the face of disrespect, mistreatment, being ignored, having to claw her way tooth and nail to success and acknowledgement. For a while it was all she could really feel, thanks to the ghost bullet, but since having it removed and more importantly attending regular therapy she's come a long way to controlling it and expressing her emotions and needs in more productive ways. But no matter what, she's not afraid to demand the respect she knows she deserves, even if that means coming across as a bit of a bitch sometimes. She's not ashamed of that impression, not really.
She has a lot of pride in her accomplishments and is a very dedicated worker when she actually wants to do the work she's doing. She's got a dry sense of humour and is very blunt even when she's being generally nice to you, but she does have a slightly softer side that people closest to her get to see. Despite all her rough edges, Melanie ultimately does want to do good in the world and cares for people.

A 5'5" White-Asian woman with mid-pale skin and dark black hair, typically styled in a bob with bangs and teal-blue dye that's grown out to the ends. She's fairly slim, with no real muscle definition to speak of. There's a scar on her shoulder from a scalpel wound and two on her leg from a bullet, both the actual initial wound and the subsequent surgery to remove it. There are, notably, no eyes in her sockets anymore and it depends on the day whether she wears glasses to cover them.
She has multiple tattoos, most of which aren't visible in clothing. Right wrist: a minimalist representation of an EMF reader. Right bicep: two black bands. Right knee: a bullet in motion. Left forearm: overlapping barbed wire. Left hip: A sheet ghost flipping the double bird, and a white-ink sheet ghost on a polaroid. Left thigh: a swarm of bats. Left ankle: A skull with heart eyes. Chest: a large luna moth, with a tiny crescent moon in her collarbone dip and four knives, two either side of the moth's upper wings.
She favours practical, often alternative-styled clothing in mostly dark colours. Day-to-day she'll always be seen with a white cane to help her get around.

Unseen: Melanie's removal of her eyes means that she is immune to certain very specific kinds of supernatural interference, mostly from her world.
History
Though she grew up in London, Melanie's parents were both diaspora—her father Irish and her mother Vietnamese. They raised her to rattle righteously against the cages that everyone around her was so eager to put her in, whether because of her race or her gender or class, and to strive for her goals with stubborn determination. Melanie was nineteen when her mother died and twenty-one when her father's early-onset dementia meant she had to send him to Ivy Meadows Care Home up in Manchester, where a few distant members of their extended family could keep an eye on him when she couldn't. She was twenty-three when he died, and she wishes she still thought it was as a result of the fire.
She set up the earliest iteration of Ghost Hunt UK when she was eighteen, but it only really took off when she was twenty after she really knuckled down, took some courses, got a team together and their first fully produced episode went viral, thanks to a genuine encounter caught on film. After that, they started producing full seasons of episodes with the occasional special and they were able to make a proper go of it thanks to ad money, sponsorships and fan support. And that was how it was for years, until the investigation at the Cambridge Military Hospital that sent her to the Institute.
After seeing 'Sarah Baldwin' have her spat with whatever Slaughter being had claimed the hospital for its own, Melanie fell down the rabbithole. First giving her statement to the Institute, then investigating war ghosts, then blowing the lid on the whole paranormal investigation community's unspoken rules and flipping them all the bird on the way out, all leading to the ghost bullet in her leg and the employment contract that trapped her at the Magnus Institute for the next year and a half. Melanie grew increasingly angry and violent during this time, attempting to kill her new boss-captor multiple times and resenting the others for not letting her.
The six months after the Unknowing were particularly rough. Having Basira to lean on helped somewhat, but between the Flesh attack and her increasing hopelessness at the situation, Melanie's corruption at the hands of the Slaughter escalated severely. She was on her way to becoming a full on Avatar if the bullet hadn't been removed and cleared her head enough to give her the chance to make a different choice, which she did. Therapy, Georgie, refusing to continue helping the Institute, eventually gouging out her eyes... Melanie got out, even if in this case that means turning up in Pumpkin Hollow instead.
